LITTLE WOMEN

LITTLE WOMEN:  This retelling of the Alcott classic is definitely for a new generation and well it should be. This new batch of March women are a strong lot, particularly Jo, played beautifully by Saoirse Ronan who garnered a Golden Globe nomination.   Her sisters are portrayed equally as well....Meg (Emma Watson), Beth (Eliza Scanlen) and Amy (Florence Pugh).  Filling the role of Marmee (and doing it admirably) is Laura Dern while Aunt March is brought to life by the incandescent Meryl Streep (who brings magic to her every performance).  With Timothee Chalamer as Theodore "Laurie" Laurence and Chris Cooper as his grandfather.  While the plot is familiar, it is told with such love and caring that it becomes a fresh take on how women were pigeonholed in earlier times.  Unless you married well...…..(you get the drift).  Beautifully photographed, this film is absolutely exquisite.  It does however dart back and forth in flashbacks but they are never disconcerting.  And the ending which is totally new to this telling, feels remarkably perfect.  An extremely satisfying movie!

BOMBSHELL

BOMBSHELL:  And the nominees are...………..well, you decide...…….Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie and John Lithgow are clearly in the running and certainly Theron will get a nod portraying Megyn Kelly in this look at the sexual misconduct by Roger Ailes (Lithgow) at FOX television. Told with bits of humor, the film still packs a wallop displaying the beginning of the "Me, too" movement (before Weinstein and all the others). The film is chocked full of actors portraying the likes of Rudy Giuliani, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reillly, Judge Jeanine Pirro, Geraldo Rivera, Chris Wallace and the list goes on and on.   Among the other supporting actors are Allison Janney, Connie Briton and Malcom McDowall as Rupert Murdock.   Whatever your beliefs in politics and/or FOX news, this is a first rate portrayal of a not too bygone past.   Never boring, always madding, and worth your attention.

JUMANJI,THE NEXT LEVEL

JUMANJI, THE NEXT LEVEL:  The original cast is back and the basic formula is here as well, but given a boost with more of everything, including an ostrich stampede, attacking baboons, and some of the best CGI work you will ever see.  The plot concerns the teenagers getting sucked back into the video game where they become Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas, and Awkwafina,   Also on board this time around is Danny DeVito and Danny Glover as well as brief appearances by Colin Hanks and Bebe Neuwirth.   As they all switch avatars at various time, you would think it would be hard to follow, but to the credit of the screenwriters, it isn't and you are always aware what character is inhabiting which body.  And it all makes for great adventure and great fun with some witty dialogue and even an homage (in the music) to "Lawrence of Arabia."  For pure escapism, this one will be hard to beat.  An extremely entertaining trip into the land of Jumanji.

FROZEN 2

FROZEN 2:   The long awaited sequel, has wonderful moments and some brilliant animation but the plot will be hard to follow for the younger set.   It's all about an enchanted forest with stone giants, horses made out of water, a cute little creature that carries fire on his/her back and a bunch of swirling leaves called Gale. The regulars are back, Elsa (the snow queen) voiced by Idina Menzel, Anna (Kristen Bell) Olaf, the snowman (Josh Gad) and the Disney Magic.  The musical numbers are varied and memorable as is the beautiful animation which harkens back to the Disney classics. It is quite a lovely film and one worth seeing.

KNIVES OUT

KNIVES OUT:  With an all-star cast, this deliciously wicked thriller is great fun and a roller coaster of twists and turns.   I refuse to give any of this intricate plot away, so you'll have to solve it as you go along.   We start out with a dead body.  Foul play?  Suicide?  And who hired the detective to investigate and why?  Even the detective doesn't know!  The superb cast is headed by Daniel Craig as the detective with the suspects seeming to be most of the family of the deceased.   On board for the mayhem is Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Pine, and Toni Collette among others with Christopher Plummer as the deceased.  ( But as the story unfolds he is very much alive in a series of flashbacks.) And it all takes place in a spooky estate worthy of Agatha Christie.  I might add, they even manage to get in a car chase.  And some laughs, as well.  (My favorite....Daniel Craig waiting in a car singing "Or am I  losing my mind" from "Follies")   If this genre is for you (as why wouldn't it be?)  treat yourself and see it pronto.

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD:  Tom Hanks embodies Mr. Rogers in this nostalgic look at the iconic television pioneer, and he does it brilliantly. Based on a true story, Matthew Rhys plays Lloyd Vogel, an Esquire magazine journalist sent to interview Mr. Roger for an upcoming article.   The friendship that develops between them is the crux of the film.   While Vogel is trying to dig up dirt on the TV personality, he can't help but fall under the spell of this remarkably kind man.  Chris Cooper, in the role of Jerry Vogel, Lloyd's estranged father, adds still another dimension to this intriguing tale as we (and Mr. Rogers) learn of the reason for the animosity between the father and son.   At times light-hearted, the film still has enough grit to be most satisfying.   And Hanks has never been better.  Truly one of our finest actors.

THE GOOD LIAR

THE GOOD LIAR: The brilliant performances of Helen Mirren as Betty McLeish, a wealthy widow and Ian McKellan as Roy Cortnay, a con-artist, make this thriller a must-see.  When the two meet on line, Roy starts to devise a plan on how to steal her millions.  What follows are a series of twists and turns that will keep you thinking "What next."   I won't go into the plot because half the fun is watching it unfold.   I admit it is a bit slow going at first, but as the pieces fall into place, the pace picks up.  And by the end...……...well, no spoilers here.

PLAYING WITH FIRE

PLAYING WITH FIRE: In this light-hearted family flick, John Cena plays Jake (a.k.a "Supe") the head of a team of Smoke Jumper Firefighters that include Keegan-Michael Key (Mark) and John Leguizamo (Roderigo).  When the team rescues a trio of children from their burning cabin with no parents in sight, they soon become baby-sitters for the clan and very quickly learn that children can be like fires--wild and unpredictable.  What starts out as quirky comedy (and there are some lovely laughs), by films end is quite touching and will bring a tear to your eye.  Key and Leguizamo are perfect foils for each other with Leguizamo always "quoting" sayings and Key always rolling his eyes and explaining "not even close."  (Example:  Leguizamo - "People who need people are the luckiest people in the world.  Barbra Bush")  All in all, it's just plain fun.  And sometimes that's all you need in a film.

JOJO RABBIT

JOJO RABBIT:   Part comedy, part drama, with a healthy dash of pathos, this is a most unusual film and quite enjoyable. Roman Griffin Davis, in a nuanced performance that belies his young age, plays Jojo Betzer, a lonely German boy in the midst of WWII.  When he discovers that his single mother, Rosie (a superb Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in the attic, he must confront his fierce Nationalism and turns to his imaginary friend, Adolph Hitler.   Yes, that Adolph Hitler!  And this Adolph Hitler is played by Taika Waititi who also wrote and directed this one-of-a-kind creation with twist and turns and cinema tricks abounding.  Others in the cast include Oscar winner Sam Rockwell and Rebel Wilson as brutish instructors in the Hitler Youth Movement.  I won't divulge too much plot, but it will keep you on your toes and the outcome is most satisfying.  If you're in the mood for a movie that's a bit different, this is the one to see.

THE CURRENT WAR

THE CURRENT WAR: While some may call it a historical picture, this film portraying the "fued/war" between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse over who would bring electricity to America is still engrossing with Edison touting Direct current and Westinghouse pushing for Alternating Current.  The marvelous Benedict Cumberbatch as Edison and the equally adroit Michael Shannon as Westinghouse along with Nicholas Hoult as Nickola Tesla give a master class in acting. These three guys (speaking of electricity) ignite the screen in this display of cutthroat competition.  Also on board is Tom Holland (the latest Spiderman) playing Edison' secretary and helper.   In this battle of wits the ultimate prize is who will bring electricity to the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.  But there is also the battle over the Electric chair!   A fascinating look as a bygone era and two dynamic gentlemen.

MALEFICENT, MISTRESS OF EVIL

MALEFICENT, MISTRESS OF EVIL:   Angelina Jolie returns in this Disney sequel that takes place 15 years later than the previous film.   When Prince Philip (Harrison Dickinson) proposed to Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) and she accepts, Philip's  mother, Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer) plots to use the wedding to divide the humans and fairies forever, causing Maleficent and Aurora to find themselves on opposite sides of an impending war.  The film may be a bit confusing to those who don't know the backstory, so be forewarned.  But it you are in the loop, it's a wonderful look at where Maleficent came from and a real fairy tale from the Disney folk.   (With some of the most imaginative fairies you'll ever see (including Imelda Staunton).  Others in the cast are Robert Lindsay as the King John and Chiwetel Ejifor as Conall. The CGI is first rate with an all-out war in the last half hour that still makes me question "How did they do that?"  It you're still a kid at heart, here is a fairy tale for you.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY

THE ADDAMS FAMILY:  I've always been a fan of this Charles Addams creation from its early days as a single panel cartoon in New Yorker magazine, through the TV show with Carolyn Jones and John Astin, as well as the live action movie with Angelica Houston and Raul Julia, so, coming full circle we are basically back to the beginning.  In this delightful animated romp, we begin with the wedding of Morticia and Gomez,  their move to New Jersey and in a quick fast forward, become parents to two frightful children.  All of the characters are here...Lurch, Uncle Fester, Grandma, Pugsly and Wednesday (Spoiler alert. Wednesday pigtails are nooses in this version)  And the real actors voicing these beloved characters are Charlize Theron (Morticia), Oscar Isaac (Gomez), Bette Midler (Grandma) along with Martin Short and Allison Janney in other roles and Snoop Dog as Cousin Itt.  All in all, it is a pleasant enough film, although I was a bit disappointed that it didn't live up to my fond memories of the earlier versions.  So, if it's your cup of tea...……...go for it.

ABOMINABLE

ABOMINABLE:   Well, every now and then, there's not much on the big screen that I want to see so I usually opt for escapism in the realm of animation.  Perhaps it's still the child within me.  At any rate, this was my choice of late and it was fun, educational (Chinese heritage comes into play) and thoroughly enjoyable.  When a teenager (Yi) discovers a Yeti on her apartment rooftop, she and two friends eventually decide to return the creature to his family in this epic adventure.  But they must stay one step ahead of a determined zoologist and a wealthy financier and his henchmen who want the Yeti for there own gain.  That's the plot in a nutshell and it takes us from the streets of Shanghai to ultimately, the breathtaking snowcapped  peaks of the Himalayas.  And along the way we discover that this particular Yeti (who is a teenager himself that they christen "Everest") has magical powers that are a major plus on the trek home. The film has some brilliant animation that makes you smile in amusement (particularly the use of clouds near the end of the film).   So it you want to recapture that child within yourself, this is one to see.

JUDY

JUDY:  In 1969, Judy Garland traveled to London for a series of sold-out concerts at "Talk of the Town" while fighting alcoholism, depression and substance abuse.  This film chronicles that period in her tragic life.  But, the film itself is almost a tribute to her stamina and determination despite the demons.  Renee Zellweger as Garland brings pathos as well as a substantial amount of humor to the role.  Putting her own spin on the Garland songbook is an almost unsurmountable task, but she does admirably most of the time, capturing the waning days of a beloved performer with compassion and sensitivity, as well as a possible Oscar nomination.  Ultimately, the film is an emotional roller-coaster with many highs and lows, (the highs being the musical numbers) and one comes away with a certain sadness from watching an icon dying in slow motion. The ending will bring tears to your eyes (at least it did to mine).

DOWNTON ABBEY

DOWNTON ABBEY:  This highly anticipated movie following the Crawley family and their servants to the big screen was well worth the wait.  It is a splendid piece of work.  With all of the original cast returning, it is an absolute joy to see them  again along with a few new faces, notably Imelda Staunton as Lady Bagshaw.  (In real life, married to Jim Carter who plays Mr. Carson, the head butler) In this outing, there is a bit of an uproar when the Crawleys learn that King Edward V and Queen Mary are about to pay them a visit.  And what fun that is, watching the household prepare for such an auspicious occasion, with the wonderful Maggie Smith offering pertinent remarks along the way.  The fly in the ointment, however, is when the household learns that the Royals travel with their own chef and other assistants (even a housekeeper) which sends the downstairs help into a tizzy with all sorts of schemes and shenanigans  arising.  New love interests also make an appearance and may leave a tiny bit of room for another future film.  (Here's hoping!)  If you were a fan of the wonderful BBC series, (or even if it's new to you) treat yourself to this sumptuous look at Downton Abbey in this excellent film written and directed by Julian Fellowes.

THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN

THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN:   Having loved this book by Garth Stein, I eagerly attended the movie which turned out to be lovely film.   The book was written in the voice of a golden retriever named Enzo and in the film that voice comes to life thanks to the wonderful "voice" acting of Kevin Costner.  Milo Vintimiglia portrays Enzo's owner, Denny, a Formula One race car driver and Amanda Seyfried is Eve, his love interest.  How Enzo reacts to the couples romance, eventual child and the triumphs and heartaches along the way is what makes this movie so charming.  I won't go into the plot so as not to spoil it for you, but I will tell you, bring Kleenex.   The ending is one of the best you'll ever see in a film this year. It will make your heart soar.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLWOOD: Quinton Tarantino's ninth film visits 1969 Los Angeles in a tribute to the end of Hollywood's Golden Age.   Featuring a large ensemble cast headed by Leonardo DiCaprio (TV star Rick Dalton) and Brad Pitt (Dalton's stunt double, Cliff Booth) as they navigate around an industry they hardly recognize anymore. With multiple storylines converging and fictional as well as real life characters in the plot, the film is fascinating as well as quite nostalgic as it unfolds. Supporting players along the way are Margot Robbie, Dakota Fanning, Luke Perry, Al Pacino, Kurt Russell and Bruce Dern.  I will not go into detail about the plot lest I ruin it for you.  Suffice it to say, the title says it all.   This is a fairy tale even though the Manson Family is involved.

THE LION KING, IMAX

THE LION KING, IMAX: With a new IMAX screen in town (Regal Theater), I thought it was time to check it out.  And this reboot of Disney's animation classic into "reality" was my choice.  Well, it turned out to be a bit of a mistake.  The IMAX was out of whack so the top and the bottom (about 2 feet on each side were black)  I complained to the management and got a refund.   But on to the film........Since I am sure you are familiar with the plot, I won't go into that.  But rather, relate some of the brilliance in this new version.  First of all, the cast of voices couldn't be better, with Danny Glover as the adult Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter at the adult Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as the villainous Scar, and the comedy relief (scene stealing) of Seth Rogen as Pumba, the warthog and Billy Richner as Timon, the meerkat.  John Kani as Rafiki, the baboon and John Oliver as Zasu, the up-tight, red billed hornbill are also stellar in their roles.  The CGI animals are flawless and recapture many iconic scenes from the earlier version (in particular, the fun-filled trio "Hakuna Matata").  Another bonus are some new songs (with Elton John doing the honors during the closing credits).  The movie feels almost like a Disney Nature Film with incredible close-ups and spectacular scenery.  However, while watching "real" as opposed to "animated" animals sing can be a bit disconcerting at first, who am I to nit pick?  If you just believe, it's a wonderful film, full of warmth and (dare, I say it) humanity!   I loved it!

SPIDER-MAN FAR FROM HOME 4DX 3D

SPIDER-MAN FAR FROM HOME 4DX 3D:  Tom Holland returns to the role of the high-flying hero who (following the events of "Avengers Endgame") must step up to face new threats in a world that has changed forever. While on a class trip to Europe, Peter Parker is contacted by Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) who seeks his help in thwarting a new threat, namely mythical destructive "Elements"  (Fire, Water, Etc.)  Adding to the mix is a new superhero, "Mysterio" (played with gusto by Jake Gyllenhaal) who also joins forces with Spidey.   Some familiar characters return...Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) along with Zandaya as M.J. (Parker's love interest.)
The movie is fast paced and a bit over-the-top at times.  Which brings me to the subject of 4DX. This is the latest gimmick to come out of Hollywood and available at limited theaters (we have it at our local Regal)  It can best be described as a virtual ride like you would find at a Universal or Disney theme parks.  Your theater seat shakes, throbs and depending on the scene, you may be pelted with bursts of  air, sprays of water, strobe lights and the like.  While I was not offended by the "ride", I doubt I would do it again......It really bordered on overkill.  That being said, the younger folks in the audience were lapping it up. So, a word to the wise...………..Oh, one more thing, during the closing credits, you will be treated to a final clip that had "Sequel" written all over it.   And I can't wait to see it.....in a "normal" screening.

YESTERDAY

YESTERDAY: British director Danny Boyle ("Slumdog Millionaire") helms this musical fantasy/love story about a would-be singer/songwriter named Jack Malik who awakens after a freak accident with a bus (during a mysterious global blackout) to discover that no one on earth has ever heard of the Beatles.  Himesh Patel plays Jack and soon capitalizes on this accident of fate by using the Beatles material to attain stardom.  Lily James is Ellie, his long time friend and Kate McKinnon plays his agent (and steals every scene she's in).  Ed Sheeran plays himself and there is a brief bit by James Corden.  The movie is slick, even psychedelic at times and the Beatle tunes are joyous even thought it is Mr. Patel doing the vocals. While I found the whole thing rather wonderful, I must admit the ending left me a bit cold, in that no reason is ever given for why this phenomenon took place.  So, my advise is don't worry about it, just enjoy a rather unique film, to say the least.

LATE NIGHT

LATE NIGHT:  Newcomer Mindy Kaling wrote and co-stars in this comedy-drama about a female talk show host (the wonderful Emma Thompson) who, because of falling ratings and the accusations that her show has no diversity in the writing ranks, decides to hire a female writer (Kaling) which leads to some witty and sometimes touching situations.   The entire cast is first rate in this fast-paced film with John Lithgow as Thompson's husband who has supported her until...……(no spoiler, here)
Thompson has never been better and it is a delight to watch this pro at work but, evenly delightful is watching Ms. Kaling "holding her own."  This really is a movie with heart that has many moments of mirth along the way.   It's well worth seeing.

ALL IS TRUE

ALL IS TRUE:   Directed by the multi-talented Kenneth Branagh who also portrays William Shakespeare in this outing, the film examines his declining years.  Judi Dench is on board as Anne Hathaway, the long suffering wife of the bard and Ian McKellan (appearing in only one scene) portrays the Earl of Southampton to whom the bard dedicated many of his sonnets.   When his renowned Globe Theater burns to the ground, the devastated Shakespeare returns to his home in Stratford where he must face his neglected family and some unresolved troubles of his two daughters while he still mourns the lost of his only son.   Mr. Branagh seems to want us to believe that the Shakespeares were just ordinary people and the script does a lot to get that idea across but I had the feeling that it is based more on speculation than truth.   But still, it's a worthwhile film, albeit slow going in the first hour.  Just to see Branagh and Dench together is a joy.

ROCKETMAN

ROCKETMAN:  Let me begin by saying that this is one of the most inventive musicals I have ever seen. Part biography and part fantasy and incorporating most of his music, this look as the early life of Elton John is absolutely thrilling.  The musical numbers are stand out and will blow you away as will the performance of Taron Egerton in the role of the legendary musical genius. Others in the cast include Jamie Bell as Barnie Taupin, Elton's long time collaborator, Richard Madden as John Reed, his manager and lover for a time and Bryce Dallas Howard as Sheila Eileen, Elton's mother.  You couldn't ask for better casting.  Going out on a limb, I think this will garner some Oscar nominations, perhaps for the dazzling costumes as well as Mr. Egerton.  At least they deserve that nod.  One note, however, it is rated R for drug use and sexual situations, so leave the kids at home and enjoy this mature look at an icon of the highest order.   I loved it!  I REALLY LOVE IT!

ALADDIN 3D

ALADDIN 3D:   Continuing the live action reboot of some of their best animated features, Disney serves up a winner with this wonderful film.  Expanding, but remaining true to the original story ("Dumbo" went a little far field), the movie is a joy from beginning to end.  Starring Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Jasmine, the cast also features Marwan Kenzari as Jafar and (filling some very big Robin Williams shoes in the animated version) Will Smith as the Genie.  And he nails it!  While the movie starts out reminiscent of other "Arabian Nights" type films, it really takes hold once Mr. Smith's Genie is on board, bringing his own brand of humor (and a little hip-hop) to the proceedings especially during his first number, the dazzling "Friend Like Me."  Robin Williams would be proud.  Directed by Guy Richie with breathtaking cinematography by Alan Stewart, all the familiar songs by Alan Menken are here with a fresh bunch of new ones that fit like a glove. While I'm sure this film will be fine in the 2D format, this 3D version really soars on that magic carpet in "A Whole New World."  Therefore, I recommend it.  Either way, it will be a treat for you.  Go see it.

THE WHITE CROW

THE WHITE CROW:  Ralph Fiennes directed this film about the defection in Paris of Rudolph Nureyev at his shining moment as the star with the Kirov Ballet.  Oleg Ivenko (a ballet star in his own right) portrays the young Nureyev in this engrossing biopic with Fiennes portraying Nureyev's teacher and mentor Alexander Pushkin in his early days in Leningrad.   The film darts back and forth with flashbacks to his youth in the Soviet Union as a guide to how he reached this pinnacle in his life.  But, the big plus here is when Ivenko takes the stage and dances...…Shear magic albeit too few scenes but he is and certainly channeling Mr. Nureyev in his performance.  And the turning point (no pun intended) of the deflection in the Paris Airport is intriguing and suspenseful.  This film may not be for everyone but if you know bits and pieces of the story, this film will fill in all the blanks.  I found it mesmerizing!

POMS

POMS:  Nobody does comedy better than Diane Keaton and she is in top form as usual.  However, this film has an underlying sadness.  Leaving her New York apartment of many years, she calls her doctor and says she is not going through Chemo.  (And that's in the first few minutes)   Then she heads for Georgia and a retirement community and prepares to die.   But fate steps in thanks to her feisty neighbor (A splendid Jackie Weaver) who takes her in hand to show her retirement life.  Soon, they have bonded and decide to start a cheerleading club much to the chagrin of the community board.  Among their recruits are Rhea Perlman and Pam Grier adding fun and fire to the mix.   This film absolutely sparkles with warmth and wit and an ending that will touch your heart.   A  real feel-good movie of the highest order!

RED JOAN

RED JOAN: Inspired by the true story of the "Granny Spy," this slow moving but well paced film tells of an elderly woman (the remarkable Judi Dench) who is arrested for giving secrets to the KGB during WWII enabling them to have nuclear capability.  As the story unfolds in flashback to her years at Cambridge in the 1930's with Sophie Cookson as the young Joan, we learn what drove and molded her commitment.   A fascinating film that is more of an anti-war piece than a spy thriller, it held my interest with fine performance throughout.  Trevor Nunn directed this food for thought cinematic foray that some will find boring, I'm sure.  I, for one, was enthralled.

LONG SHOT

LONG SHOT:  Charlize Theron and Seth Rogan are the unlikely couple in this adult  comedy that takes a few hits at politics and the Media (a Fox stand-in) along the way.  She is about to run for President and he is hired to "punch up" her speeches.  And I must say their chemistry on screen is flawless and soon the pair have found love and the rough road that can rise up before them.  I call this an adult comedy because of some rough language, drug usage, and even a bit of masterbation.  That being said, it's funny!  And the two stars shine in this raunchy romp.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME

AVENGERS: ENDGAME:   Wrapping it all up with an all-star cast...…...Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), Chris Evans (Captain America), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Paul Rudd (Ant-man), Tom Holland (Spiderman), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) and Evangeline Lilly (The Wasp.)   In case you think I jest about an all-star cast, also on board is Jeremy Renner, Rene Russo, Tilda Swenton, Natalie Portman, Marisa Tomei, Michelle Pfeiffer, William Hurt, Angela Basset, Michael Douglas, Chris Pratt, Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford.  Josh Brolin returns as the super-villain Thanos and a separate nod to Vin Deisel and Bradley Cooper for suppling the voices for two of the CGI creatures, Groot and Rocket, respectively.  Now, for the plot...……well, it's simply too complicated to explain but, suffice it to say, it's a thrill ride with some wonderful emotional scenes along the way as well as needed laughs..  But be forewarned, the running time is 3 hours.  While I have not seen every film in this franchise, this one sort of ties it all up neatly and even has a lovely twist at the end after the final battle.   And stay through the credits to catch the names of everyone you didn't recognize in the various cameos.   Great fun!

PENGUINS

PENGUINS:  A documentary from the folks at Disneynature, this enchanting film follows the coming-of-age story of an Adelie penguin named Steve as he and a million or so fellow males during the icy Antartic spring try to build a suitable nest, find a life partner and start a family.  And once that happens (we get to see the chicks hatching in close up) it is still not easy going with predators such as killer whales and Leopard seals interrupting the goings on.  The photography is remarkable in this film (during the closing credits, you get a peek at the workings of how it was done).  It is stark, breathtakingly beautiful (particularly some underwater footage) and a real wonder to behold.  If your love animals and/or documentaries of this type, you're in for a real treat!  And the narration by Ed Helms in which he voices the thoughts of Steve at times is funny, tender and perfect.

THE BEST OF ENEMIES

THE BEST OF ENEMIES:  The unlikely, but true story, of a black civil rights activist Ann Atwater  (Taraji P. Henson) and her meeting with a Ku Klux Klan president for the local chapter in Durham, North Carolina. The Klansman, C.P. Ellis is portrayed by Sam Rockwell who is fast becoming one of my favorite actors (Oscar for "Three Billboards..." and a splendid George W. Bush in "Vice").  When the two are thrown together to co-chair a community summit on desegregation of schools, they are as far apart as two sides can be, but through the course of the film, they come to know each other and even gain respect fore each other.    Although the film is a little long and a bit predictable,  the ending is a gem and worth seeing.

SHAZAM

SHAZAM: While we may be oversaturated with superheroes in the movies these day, this one is actually worth seeing.  It's sort of a take on "Big," the Tom Hanks movie, but with the boy becoming a superhero every time he utters the word "Shazam."  Asher Angel portrays Billy Batson, the young man who morphs into Captain Marvel (Zachery Levi).  (Note: this is the original DC comic book take on the character before the latest female Captain Marvel appeared on the cinema scene.) With something for everyone, a wonderful villain played by Mark Strong, some nice CGI effects and an abundance of laughs, this is a family film of the highest order.  While it takes a while for the humor to kick in (Remember our superhero is still a 14-year old trapped in a man's body) and the whole thing runs a bit too long, it was still a fun excursion into the DC realm of fantasy. And you won't believe the names they come up with before they hit on Captain Marvel.

DUMBO

DUMBO:  From the imagination of Tim Burton, this new take on the Disney classis is nothing short of incredible.  Although, it bears no resemblance to the original animated feature, it is still remarkable in its own right (with a homage or two to the cartoon along the way)  .  A perfect cast includes Colin Farrell as the handler of the elephants, Danny DeVito as the circus owner and ringmaster with Michael Keaton, Eva Green and Alan Arkin in supporting roles.  Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins portray Farrell's children and do admirably. That being said, the star of the piece is Dumbo himself and a brilliant bit of CGI he is. (And we get to find out how his name came about.....(you surely didn't think his mother Mrs. Jumbo named him that) The story is a bit darker this time around (as Mr. Burton is wont to do) but I loved every minute of it.  And shed a tear or two at the ending.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD.  Part three in this franchise and the best! The continuing saga of Toothless, the dragon and his master Hiccup, we have an all-star cast of voices including Jay Baruchel as Hiccup with other roles filled by America Ferrera, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, F. Murray Abraham, Kristen Wiig and Johan Hill. While very young children may not "get it," the younger crowd of pre-teens I saw it with where gung-ho and give it a round of applause at the film's end.  The animation is wonderful, thrilling at times as the noble band of Vikings set out to find the Hidden world where all dragons are same and thrive.   Villainy is in the mix however and the task is not easy.  Along the way and particularly at the end, some life lessons are explained without being obvious of preachy.   All in all, it's a lovely film with a happy ending.  Just what we need.

A DOG'S WAY HOME

A DOG'S WAY HOME:  This is one of those film's that Disney used to make when I was growing up and I loved it!  It is scary, heartwarming, sad, funny and all totally believable.  Dallas Bryce Howard supplies the voice-over of the dog Bella's thoughts throughout this canine saga in which she travels 400 miles and crosses paths with an orphaned mountain lion, a pack of wolves and various nice and not-so-nice humans along the way just to be reunited with her "family."  With supporting work from Ashley Judd, Edward James Olmos and Jonah Hauer-King as Lucas, Bella's owner.  Filmed beautifully along the trek from Arizona to Denver, there is even an avalanche to contend with.  But Bella is one spirited dog!  And worth a visit for a feel-good film.

STAN AND OLLIE

STAN AND OLLIE: Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly are nothing short of brilliant in their portrayals of the comedy duo, Laurel and Hardy.  Together, they capture all the warmth, humor and  mannerisms of the comic legends.

In 1953, with their golden age of Hollywood long behind them, the two try for a comeback by going on tour to various variety halls in the British Isles while waiting for the financing to come through on a proposed picture. Small houses are a bit discouraging at first, but soon they have regained their old prominence until long buried tensions arise once more and Ollie falls ill.

This wistful, nostalgic look at the talents they possessed will bring tears of joy to your eyes and a tug at your heartstrings.  It is magical movie-making and a fond farewell to two of the best.  Go see it!!!

SERENITY

SERENITY: Matthew McConaughey plays Baker Dill, a fishing boat captain who leads tours off of a tranquil Plymouth Island.  That peaceful life is soon shattered when his ex-wife, Karen (Ann Hathaway) tracks him down with a plea for help.  It seems she and the son they share are being abused by her new husband and she wants Dill to take him out to sea and "feed him to the sharks."   With stunning photography (and Diane Lane in a supporting role) this "thriller" had a lot going for it. Too much in fact, while trying desperately to be a film noir, it ultimately fails on any number of fronts.  Plot twists seem to arise out of thin air and the big "reveal" is just plain silly.  Too bad, it should have been better.   Skip "Serenity" and keep your sanity.

GLASS

GLASS:  This latest film from M. Night Shyamalan is the third in a trilogy of films (the first two I did not see, so I may have been at a disadvantage going in.)  But, it holds up on its own merits and is engulfing. It's all about Super Heroes (at least in their own minds or are they real?)  The movie belongs to James McAvoy who plays a total of 20 different characters (can you say split personality?) and is absolutely magnificent in the part(S).  Co-starring are Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson who have there own sets of problems. (no spoilers here)  Sarah Paulson plays a doctor who seems to be in charge (or is she?).  While the film is a trifle hard to follow, it holds your interest, big time.  But I wish I'd seen the first two ("Unbreakable" and "Split") And I must say I admire Mr. Shylamalan (who does a cameo himself) for keeping the gore to a minimum (it's rated PG-13) and still supplies the needed thrill and chills.

ON THE BASIS OF SEX

ON THE BASIS OF SEX: This is the true story of the early career and court cases of Ruth Bader Ginsburg played with much insight and panache by Felicity Jones (with not even a hint of her British accent).  Armie Hammer portrays her husband, Martin with Justin Theroux, Kathy Bates and Sam Waterston in supporting roles. At first I was afraid there would be too much "legalese" in the screenplay (written by Ms. Ginsburg real-life nephew) but it is quite easy to follow and becomes fascinating to watch the unfolding of the major case involved.  It's hard to believe out far we're come (due in part to both of the Ginsburgs) and I gained a new respect for the woman as well as the jurist.  This bio pic should be required viewing for anyone interested in law and how it has shaped our country.   A splendid movie that I highly recommend.

THE FAVOURITE

THE FAVOURITE:  A Golden Globe nominee for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) as well as Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) for Olivia Colman and two Best Supporting Actress nods to Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone, this cynical farce is a film to see, not only for the acting but for the stunning sets and costumes. In the early 18th Century, a frail Queen Anne (Colman) is cared for by her loyal servant, Sarah (Weisz) who also aids in running the Empire.  When a new servant, Abigal (Stone) arrives, her charm wins everyone over.  But soon, things begin to change. And that change is such fun to watch with all its lustiness, intrigue and deceit (not to mention some razor-sharp dialogue).   I must add that the Cinematography is outstanding and Oscar worthy (no category exists in the Golden Globes) but be forewarned much of the film seems to be shot with "available light" and some of the nighttime candle-lit scenes will most likely be too dark for TV viewing.  So, if you plan on seeing this superb offering, get thee to the cinema!  And revel in some brilliant acting by three of the screen's finest actresses.
